Diversion

I know it-s easy to get diverted about an ugly fence that-s been there for years and an ugly guard rail that is kind of stupid since it blocks people from using the pedestrian path (total brain fart there), but how about we address the problem that-s happening right now, right in front of everyone. the sidewalk on Westward Drive is too elevated. Now, the engineers are adding landscaping that will drain water away from the sidewalk and onto the street. Who-s the genius that came up with this? the Westward path has long been overdue, but my goodness, do they have to screw up the perfectly good drainage Westward used to have. Let-s see. Some basic physic. Gravity pulls water to the lowest point. Now, the inside lanes on Westward will puddle on light rains and flood on heavy rains because the median is no longer the lowest point Water will go to the lowest point. Now that low point will be the street. Geez, I can-t make this up. Does anybody in the city have any VISION or capability to see what their actions will do? They have 2 choices to correct this: Remove the excess dirt they-ve started to add so that water can ac ulate on the median or add expensive sewer drains. HINT: If they add expensive sewer drains then you know 100% for sure, someone is making money off the tax payers once again.

Uglification

That-s stupid. By that logic, every sidewalk in Miami needs a guard rail. By that logic, we need add an ugly guard rail along the whole of Westward Drive. That makes NO sense whatsoever. That-s really a stupid argument that we need a guard rail to protect pedestrians. Again, if that-s the case, we need to put guard rales along any stretch that has a pedestrian path or sidewalk near the roadway. That-s a lame lame excuse. I-m not saying your wrong in citing the county-s argument. I-m just saying we have a bunch of panzies at city hall that just said "OKAY." instead of saying, "Wait, this makes no sense whatsoever.

Uglification

The fence at westward field has always been there nothing has changed for many years the fence was put at Stafford because kids were pulling those wood thingys up and driving cars on the lot spinning circles. I fought Miami Dade when the gard rail was put in and they said the thing had to be put on the outside to protect the people using the path. If a car runs off on to the path it would hurt someone so that makes sense but I donít know why they didnít put more areas to get in miami springs money wasnít used for it
Report Abuse (beta)

Uglification

The fence is part of the uglification of the city. Projects with good intentions that make the city look worse. The road barrier along Royal Poinciana wins my favorite uglification award as it could have been much better if it were placed between the bike path and the canal. Instead, you have an inaccessible bike path that made Royal Poinciana look horrible. If they ever add rails on Ludlam (it-ll come some day) hopefully they-ll learn from their mistakes and put it between the bike path and canal.

A - It looks like a prison fence. B - When open, the park is open to everyone, not just tax paying Springs residents, so what you-re saying is false.

That fence is there to insure that Miami Springs tax payers are the ones that use these facilities and not others who don-t live or pay taxes here.

I-ll add that it looks like a prison yard fence. Prince Field uses the same fencing, but they at least used lots of trees to make it look nicer.

The fence was supposed to be TEMPORARY because they were fixing the gr . That was several years ago. Remember, they take money from your taxes to pay for a public park that you are not allowed to enter... Lovely, huh?

Stafford Park and Prince Park all fenced up

Stafford Park and Prince Park all fenced up. Respectfully requesting our ďpublicĒ parks and fields to be ďpublicĒ again, not for the use of special interest groups that may at best represent a part of the public, BUT definitely NOT all of the public. I am in dismay to see Miami Springs parks no longer available to all its citizen. In fact, the number one reason why we bought at Miami Springs, when we could have bought much cheaper in the rest of the Miami area, was because Miami Springs offered so many open areas and parks. We are no longer able to take our kids to Stafford park or to Prince field, and throw a baseball, or kick around a soccer ball, because these field are open only to a few privilege ones, on very specific times. The rest of us get kicked out. Believe it or not!! The idea of using tax payer money to build a fence around a ďpublicĒ field, paid and supported by tax payers, to keep tax payers from using the field is the equivalent of building a wall in the U.S frontier to keep U.S citizen from coming into the U.S. It is truly that absurd of a concept, and it violates any sense of fairness and decency. I am aware that these wonderful fields in Stafford Park, and Prince Field, and any other park that belongs to Miami Spring, will incur more wear and tear; welcome that, for it means that yours citizens are fully enjoying the facilities that rightfully belongs to them. Please, I beg of you, return our parks to us. Town Meeting today 10 23 17. Let make city council aware of our concern.

Westward Path

I always liked the idea of adding a bike path to Westward. Not sure why it-s concrete instead of asphalt, but concrete doesn-t bother me and it lasts longer and is better for skaters. But I do have a major gripe. It seems the city did not follow their own rules. If you build a driveway on your home, the driveway cannot be elevated higher than the roadway because it creates puddles, ponding, flooding, on the road way. Makes sense as the city wants to retain freedom of movement during storms. Westward has a high point in the middle of the road. The lane closest to the median drains to the median. No problem. When it rains, the water simply drains to the median that is lower than the road way. Across from the rec center, the city added unnecessary curbing. As a result the water could not flow to the median so they spent even more money and added drainage to avoid flooding and ponding. Fast foward to the new bike path. The geniuses made the sidewalk higher than the road. Then, I see they are adding dirt fill between the road and the sidewalk making the median higher than the road. That means, we-re going to start getting flooding along Westward unless they add expensive drainage. All they had to do was make the sidewalk lower. there was no need to make it so tall or to add the extra dirt making the median taller than the roadway. Either that or they just like making expensive projects that require fixes after the fact. This is the kind of common incompetence that turns a good project bad. Let-s build a bike path! Yay! Great idea. But let-s screw it up and create a flooding problem. SMH!

Once upon a time newspapers and radio were independently owned and provided a pretty decent cross-section of opinions on any given topic. I recent years most newspapers became part of a single owner conglomerate which although printed under different names, postulated the same opinion. This and the birth of the 24 hour news cycle has all but done away with real journalists and all we have now are political operatives mascaraing as journalists.      He who controls the media controls public opinion.

BTW, Do you really want to rely on the press to spot corruption?     The same press that has come out of the closet and has become openly political, been caught lying (Dan Rather, Brian Williams and a plethora of others)? ? ?
Report Abuse (beta)

El Facto

Well we need to be careful about generalizations. There was corruption everywhere including MS in the distant past. In the 70-s several council people were busted for corruption. I think corruption is more blatant and even accepted as a way of life in Banana Republics but it happens in all settings and cultures. Vigilance and exposure by the people and the free press is critical to fighting corruption on all levels. The free press and individual freedoms in this country make it more possible to expose corruption but people must do their part.

If you cut out the bridge, you relocate m ive traffic to Royal Poinciana and East Drive that cannot handle the traffic. The bridge will be so backed up the traffic will back into Okeechobee. Florida DOT will never go for this. You add a major inconvenience to the "quick run" to CVS. I-m all for less traffic, but Curtiss Parkway is designed to handle 2 lanes of traffic. It-s not like your shoving 4 lanes of traffic into one lane. Plus, there-s nothing slowing down the incoming traffic from proceding until they get to 36 st. In other words, the traffic flows and is moving. The problem only happens when the outbound traffic clogs up the circle. That-s the clear and obvious problem.

Never say never about closing the bridge. What kind of enforcement is going to have any effect on the traffic coming over the bridge? Once in a while you get a speeder on Curtiss but for the most part people don-t speed over the bridge or around the Circle because they can-t due to congestion. So a few people get tickets and they slow down a little. I am all for enforcement but the reality is it won-t really stop any incoming traffic.

Bridge

Other concerns voiced on here regarding shutting down the incoming bridge is that residents would have to utilize East Dr or Ludlum adding a few minutes to their commute. Sure it would be a minor inconvenience but overall the benefit to the city and its property values by eliminating the incoming congestion would be excellent. The bridge, Circle and Curtiss were not meant to accommodate such over development in the county which has resulted in so many commuters using our quaint little town as a main artery for cut through traffic. We need to rescue our city from the congestion that is choking our beautiful downtown. It will only get worse if we don-t and eventually the county or DOT will want to expand the road way through the city if we don-t act now.
Report Abuse (beta)

bridge

Why is every one wasting time on this. The only thing going to happen in this city is what ever the Stooges and Mcselfie need or want.
Report Abuse (beta)

Bridge

The solution to the incoming bridge is to shut it down and provide a nice pedestrian only plaza as was suggested in the letters to the Gazette recently. That will have a calming effect and draw residents and visitors to the downtown area to frequent stores and restaurants. It would be a unique setting. Yes the road is part of the county but if the residents don-t help push this idea the county will eventually want to widen Curtiss and eliminate the Circle to allow more traffic to cut through and ruin our town. Some people say the main problem is the outgoing bridge and it is a problem. But that doesn-t mean we can-t solve the incoming problem. Plus, some of the incoming traffic swings around the Circle which helps congest the outgoing side.
Report Abuse (beta)

Bridge

As I stated in my first post, the toll would only apply To non Miami springs residents. This would bring revenue To Miami Springs without taxing us.
Report Abuse (beta)

Bridge

I respectfully disagree. You will be adding a significant tax to Miami Springs residents who travel those roads daily. Furthermore, the incoming traffic is not the problem. Yes, there-s a lot of traffic, that comes in, but there-s nothing inhibiting the traffic. They have the same 2 lanes all through Curtiss Parkway to 36 st. The problem is when the outbound traffic to Hialeah backs up around the circle. That-s problem numero uno.
Report Abuse (beta)

Bridge

A toll on a bridge is not insane. Key biscayne and Venetian Causeway have tolls. People do not drive through Coral Gables to get somewhere else, a toll would not make sense. People are driving through Miami Springs, clogging the roads and not buying anything from our Businesses. A toll here would make sense.

And I-m sorry, but this country is a nation of laws. You can-t pick and choose which laws to follow. You can fight to fix or repeal laws we don-t like, but so long as they-re in the books we need to follow them.

Boat

I see boat owners pull their boats out on weekends to work on them, clean them, use them, etc. But once they are done, they put them back. Is the boat just parked in the front during weekdays or is it attached to a vehicle (like a truck) and they-re using it daily while on vacation maybe?

Ordinance

So because someone rightly points out that people are violating ordinances designed to keep MS from becoming a less attractive place like Hialeah they should seek out the KKK? Wow, that is a sign that you can-t argue the issue on merit so you jump straight to the race, discrimination card. Pretty weak.

Ordinance?

OMG, you are absolutely right! ! ! !      I guess that you will just have to move now.    Perhaps to Tallah ee where they still have an active Klan chapter.

Ordinance?

Boats parked in front of the house, cars parked on front lawns on the gr  instead of driveway or swale area. Pools without any security fence or enclosures. What the hell? My fear isn-t that Miami Springs will become Hialeah South. My fear is that we already are. One simple example that has all this, just drive down Albatross. All of this was from before Irma too.

What

What kind of answer was that? We have tropical storm debris sitting for 38 days and if someone complains you want them to just shut up. Gosh, you-d make a great block chivato selling out any neighbor that complains. We cleaned up after Wilma a lot faster than this.

debris

Please give us your address and we will pick up our area and place it in your alley right behind your house, we can clearly see it wont inconvenience you at all. It-s not a matter of not pulling our own, its the fact that we paid for services not bein rendered.

Debris

Very Simple. If the debris bothers you so much. PICK UP YOURSELF. Im sure if the city charged you, you wouldnt hesitate.

Public Works

So this person trying to get rid of all those "Old people with a voice" or any one else who sees things differently. Does he want firing squads or gas chambers? What a total IDIOT.

Public works

Just parading the crane truck so our citizens can see that it still runs. In the face of all those that said it was broken. They just didn-t see the need to use it.

Beautiful Miami Springs is a quiet residential community located in the heart of Miami-Dade County, Florida. Literally, just minutes away from anything in Miami, it's a slow paced oasis within the larger hustle and bustle of greater Miami.

Miami Springs was founded in 1926 by Glenn Curtiss, also known as the "Father of Naval Aviation." Miami Springs is a middle to upper middle class neighborhood with a mix of blue collar and white collar workers. At the core of Miami Springs is a championship style 18 hole golf course that has hosted hundreds of tournaments and celebrities alike.

Miami Springs has a mix of homes ranging from modest to luxury. Most of the larger, luxury style homes can be found along the beautiful golf course.

Miami Springs has a row of hotels along NW 36 Street, adjacent to Miami International Airport. The proximity to the airport and the 10 - 15 minute distance to the Port of Miami Cruise Ships and South Beach makes Miami Springs a popular hotel destination for tourists from all across the globe.

MiamiSprings.com was created in 1997 by local businessman and Miami Springs resident, Nestor Suarez. Nestor loved the city he grew up in and created the first website dedicated to the Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens area. To this day, Mr. Suarez still operates the website providing local news, events, updates, and photos. The website also has a popular (and sometimes controversial) political forum where anyone can discuss current local issues, politics, ideas.
